Day 2 - Calico, CA to Flagstaff, AZ*

Day 2 - Calico Ghost Town

Today was a VERY long travel day.  We have gone 609 miles since we have left home.  This morning Coletta and Mary Kay did their exercise routine together.   Then all went to Calico ghost town for a very quick visit.

The town is up on a hillside ledge overlooking the desert.
The town has lots of history and interesting things to see.  The walls of this house are made of all kinds of glass bottles.  It is just off the main street.
And off course there is the adobe/rock house.

After exploring the town a bit, we packed and loaded into our vehicles and head off for the Jack Smith Memorial Park in Needles, Ca.  The highway was very rutty but we finally got to Needles.

The Jack Smith Memorial Park is a great park and we had a beautiful view of the Colorado river but unfortunately it was 112 degrees outside and we were cookin'.  So Timothy, Luke, Amanda and I took matter into our own hands and went into the river all of our clothes on.  Ahhhh, that felt wonderful!!!!

A quick Lunch and then off we went across the border into Arizona.

We made a quick little stop to see the Golf Ball house.

The Golfball House is in the process of being made into a museum on UFOs.  It was a dance hall and a home among other things in its past.  It was pretty neat, but it was still 112 degrees outside so we hopped back into the cool vehicles and headed off.

Ash Fork, AZ  -The Route 66 Museum was closed :( but we had a yummy pizza for dinner.

The temperature is down to a pleasing 96 degrees.  Hopefully the KOA swimming pool will be open for the kids in Flagstaff, Arizona.  They have been asking to go swimming since we woke up and it will not be a pretty sight if that pool at the KOA is not open!
____
"Sorry we don't have a swimming pool."

Thank God, both Ben and Tim handled it really well.  I think they were too tired to care anymore...  AND  they got to sleep in a teepee.  That was really cool.

We were at the Flagstaff KOA and was it  really pretty here.  I was really thinking this place was going to be a dump because it is out in the middle of nowhere but it is a really nice place.  We were all exhausted though.

That was the longest and hardest day planned for the trip and it lived up to that.  Coletta and George somehow still kept up with being our camp ambassadors and were enjoying chit chat with the neighbors.
