Happy Anniversary, Transcontinental Railroad!

Did you notice on History.com's This Day in History that 143years ago the Transcontinental railroad was completed!  Just think back at how remote most of the route was and all the hard work was done by so many people to complete this huge project.  It goes to show that if people work together big things are accomplished!

We really enjoyed visiting the Golden Spike Tower in North Platte, Nebraska.  The tower overlooks Union Pacific's 2,850-acre Bailey Yard, the world's largest train yard.  In fact we enjoyed it soooo much we will be visiting it agail!

The tower is 8 stories high, which I know is nothing compared the the buildings in NYC, but on the plains where the land is flat and less populated you can get a great view.  The tower also has all sorts of information on "The Orphan Trains".  And they have a great little gift shop!  And as an added attraction they have a corn field planted next door with a picture carved in it so if you visit at the right time of the year you will be surprised with art from an arial view!
